Family: Amaranthaceae
Attractive perennial shrubs which usually grow and flower as a response to rain. Flower colours include yellow, pink and purple.
Species found in this area include Ptilotus calostachyus, Ptilotus clementii, Ptilotus exaltatus, Ptilotus fusiformis, Ptilotus helipteroides, Ptilotus latifolius, Ptilotus macrocephalus, Ptilotus nobilis, Ptilotus obovatus, Ptilotus polystachyus, Ptilotus schwartzii and Ptilotus sessilifolius.
The flowers of Ptilotus obovatus were used by Aboriginal people as decoration in ceremonies. The soft branches were used for lining the wooden dishes used to carry children.
These beautiful plants can be found growing throughout Central Australia and often form large colourful drifts across the landscape.
Where to find this plant at Alice Springs Desert Park
Look out for these throughout the Woodland habitat. They can also be seen popping up everywhere on park after rain.
